WFFC 2009: Bio-security Notes

1.0 Introduction:
These notes are provided with two main aims:

(i) to prevent the inward transmission of species (plants or animals) which are alien or damaging to the wildlife of UK water systems, and
(ii) to prevent the outward transmission of species (plants or animals) which may be hazardous to the environment of other countries of the World.

2.0 Inward Transmission:
Anglers participating in the WFFC 2009 in Scotland must ensure that they adhere strictly to the following code of practice.:

  • The use of felt-soled boots/waders is strictly forbidden (this is a measure which is primarily intended to reduce the possible transmission of Gyrodactylus salaris (a parasite of salmonid species found in some parts of Scandinavia).
  • All items of equipment, footwear and clothing should be thoroughly dried before use in the UK
  • Where possible, all items of equipment, footwear and clothing should be carefully disinfected with chlorine-based biocides. Chlorine-based agents include standard household bleach (which should be diluted appropriately immediately before use, and given the minimum exposure time to be effective)
  • For further information consult:

  • It should be noted that the importing of plants, fish and animals removed from their native habitat constitutes an offence under UK and Scottish Law.

    3.0 Outward Transmission:

  • Scotland is fortunate not to suffer from major problems caused by aquatic species, but the potential for plants and animals to be transmitted to other countries and cause difficulties there, should not be ignored.
  • As a consequence, the organisers take this opportunity to stress the importance of careful attention to bio-security to prevent the ‘exporting’ of UK species. Care should be taken to dry thoroughly all items of clothing and angling equipment and , should your country require disinfection procedures, to accomplish this effectively. Normally, this involves the use of biocidal agents (normally chlorine-based). Should you require assistance, we would be pleased to advise.
